Here's Where I Came In

Image
Making a queue. I still haven't decided what to do for original flavor SSC. Going to plug away here with these Chuck Miller posts. It's too good to stop now. Fit (2003) A couple of decades back we had a band. We were still pretty fresh as a band, but we had some stuff that needed to be recorded and documented and maybe put onto an Ep that we could use to see if we could get gigs with and trade with other bands. We ended up going to local maestro Mike Wisti's Albatross Studio in the basement of his house. Before we actually booked we talked dates and made arrangements with Mike and he gave me a copy of his yearly "best of" of recordings he'd done the previous year. (I'll post that at some point. There's some really interesting things on there that never got a proper release) For me the standout track was "Misunderstanding" by Milhaus. That was my personal introduction to the world of Chuck Miller. It was the only thing on there that I immedia...

For Convenience Sake

Image
I suppose I should work on finishing up the tikka masala since that's the oldest thing in the fridge. I finished Borderlands 3 the other day. Not sure what to do with myself...  Beat Is Murder - Cockfights & Cakefights 1992-1996 (2003) Minneapolis' favorite Beat Group's output compiled lovingly and conveniently onto a single compact disc for a sweet one stop shop. Keith Patterson, he of the ever present greek fisherman's hat has been plowing this particular furrow since the late 80s in multiple 60s inspired band. He's kind of the Twin Cities version of Mono Man from Boston's the Lyres, only for European Freakbeat stuff. I remember leaving my job by Loring Park one early evening back in the 90's when they used to show Movies in the Park with a band on Tuesdays during the summer and hearing somebody putting down a Monk's cover and wandering over to see what that was all about. I dug it. Select covers and like minded originals in glorious high fideli...

Indecision Time

Yeah, I skipped out on work to see a show tonight and since I was a little undecided up until I put my shoes on, it sold out. So I kind of wasted a mental health night. Sucks. But I got package today with more Bunnygrunt records in it. So maybe it's a push Old Fashioned Sass for the Peacock and the Voyeur (2003) Kentucky Gag Order. They still exist today and most recently as August of 2021 played at Palmer's Bar on the West Bank. I must have been working. I definitely would have gone to check that shit out.

I Bring You the Rock

Without ado. Let us Rock Commander Mandible (2003) Bridge Club. (All relevant links are dead) It's rock and roll. Play loud.

Volume Five

Image
The subtitle of this one is "Most Likely to Rock!" Twin Town High Volume 5 (2003) Full track list on Discogs Another one with some winners. Faux Jean, the Exercise track that made me hunt down their other stuff, local stalwarts Rank Strangers, more Kruddler, a tender and sexy song by Tulip Sweet plus plenty of bands that I may get to someday or never released anything else. A nice smattering of hip hop, rock and other stuff. It was a heady time to be young. Yeah.

A Summer Cold

Image
It's my week off from work and I had a few plans for getting parts of the new place in order and places I wanted to go and things I wanted to do. Didn't happen. Summer cold knocked me on my ass for a couple of days and I'm playing catch up with the barest minimum of what I actually need to do. So there's that. Otherwise I'm feeling tons better, but the post nasal drip still lingers. Not that it really matters. Luke's Angels (2003) Indie girl pop. Played with them once at a party organized by John Kuker. Rather enjoyed them. There is a follow up to this released in 2008 that I can't say as I've ever seen, but I'm on the hunt for. For both our sakes.

Can't Concentrate

Image
My thing lately has been boxes of cheap red wine. It's easy, it's convenient. Nothing's too expensive that I feel guilty about using it to deglaze pans with when I cook and shit like that. And they keep for a long while compared to an open bottle of wine. But pulling off a couple of glasses is on occasion just a little bit too nonchalant and we get to a place like where I'm at now. Stressed out, but a little relaxed. Just not able to concentrate very well but also at a point where I have really run out of fucks in the matter anyway, so who gives a shit. Anyway, here's the other disc by Exercise The Autumn Gentleman (2003) Unfortunately it seems this is also a victim of a failure on my part to transfer the scans from the other laptop. You'll pardon the shitty picture. Perhaps once the dust has cleared I'll fix this. Perhaps not. It's more of the good stuff from the previous release. A little digging says that one member was previously part of Calvin Krim...

More of Something Different but Related

I've got a lot of stuff to clear out of the freezer in the next month. Somehow I'll manage to choke down a gallon of ice cream and other assorted freezer burnt bits and bobs of crap. (like the frozen takoyaki that I don't totally regret getting, but can't say as I recommend either) But as it is I should button up a couple more posts and start some cleaning and sorting in preparation of the upcoming big move. If I can throw an hour or two at it a few times a week or so it should be much more manageable. Chisel (2003) This is actually and weirdly enough a follow up to the previous post concerning 13 Hertz. Hi Fi seems to be where the drummer Kent Mortimer hung his shingle after 13 Hertz and along with a Dan Page and Andrew Honigman made the fifth band on Discogs to call themselves Hi Fi It's a weird amalgam of AOR/MOR, pop rock with odd touches and a bit of contemporary bar blues band and strings thrown in for good measure. Recorded by Ev Olcott of 12 Rods renown. O...

"Laraine Newman is the St. Paul of ‘SNL"

Image
Same Night.  Another post which buys me more time to ignore this for a few weeks and try and get back to some semblance of healthy enough from my bout with COVID to go back to work and care for people sick with COVID again.  2003 - Does This Sound Exciting Yet? Superhopper's 3rd. Another contemporary non-interview article from the Minnesota Daily . Liquor seems to have been involved. This round they have ditched the trombone and are asking the really important questions like "What ever happened to Laraine Newman ?" Other highlights are "I Am the Hermit" and definitely "What It Takes". Oh yeah, Superhopper also have a Bandcamp page with a number of miscellaneous and compilation tracks including a title track for this album that they left off it for reasons.  Fill in the gaps.
